Alliance, is a multinational general insurance company headquartering in
London UK. Royal Sun Alliance operates in thirty one countries and
provides insurance products and services in more than 140 through a
network of local business partners. It has seventeen million customers.
Royal Sun Alliance was created by the merger of Sun Alliance and Royal
Insurance in 1996.
RSA was formed following the merger of Sun Alliance and Royal Insurance in 1996 Sun Alliance was itself a product of a previous merger of 1959 with The Sun, which itself was founded in 1710 along with The Alliance, which was founded in 1824 by Nathan Rothschild and his business partner Moses Montefiore. Since then Sun Alliance went on to acquire London Assurance in 1965 (becoming Sun Alliance & London) and subsequently Phoenix Assurance in 1984.
The royal sun alliance car insurance is listed on the LSE (London stock exchange) and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
Royal Insurance was founded over a century ago in 1845. It acquired Liverpool & London and Globe Insurance Company via a takeover in 1919. The company formally changed its name from Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group plc to RSA Insurance Group on twentieth May 2008 though many still recognize the name as Royal Sun Alliance.
In March 2009, Royal Sun Alliance announced plans for the shedding of 1,200 jobs from its UK operations, a reduction of around 15%. Which was the source of considerable controversy due to many workers becoming redundant.
On 4 February, it was announced that Stephen Hester, the former CEO of RBS Group would become CEO of Royal Sun Alliance with effective immediately . Prompting ripples throughout the company.

Royal Sun Alliance is currently the second-largest general insurance company currently in the entire United Kingdom. Its global headquarters are in London specifically located on Fenchurch Street and the headquarters of its UK operations are on Leadenhall Street. Its registered office is in St Mark’s Court, Horsham. several of the other key UK offices are located in Liverpool, Halifax, Bristol, Manchester, Belfast, Chelmsford, Glasgow, Cardiff, Sunderland, Peterborough, and Birmingham. RSA, including its recent PLC creation “More Than” brand, that announced itself to be the first carbon neutral insurance company in the UK on 2 December 2006.
RSA also owns the “More Than direct car, home, pet and travel insurance” brand in the United Kingdom, recognised widely for its former Lucky The Dog advertisements and its “MORE IS …” campaign. More Than also sells a considerable amount of varied insurances such as van, business car, shops and offices and business insurance through its More Than Business operation.
The company however has suffered some controversies for example In January 2002 Royal & Sun Alliance became involved in several litigation over claims for injury arising from asbestosis that affected workers in Clyde shipyards. The workers alleged that in a period of time between 1972–1977 Royal Sun Alliance were issuing insurance certificates to asbestos manufacturer Turner and Newall but had in fact excluded cover for asbestosis, in breach of the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act of1969. Royal Sun Alliance then responded that asbestos-related injury was excluded from the policy simply for the reason that it was a risk the company was not willing to underwrite, and that Turner and Newall was in fact self-insured against asbestosis therefore they should therefore be responsible for any compensation required.
